In recent years, air fryers have grown in popularity, pushing their forgotten step-sister, the toaster oven, out of the way. Air fryers can offer convenience and efficiency when compared to traditional cooking methods. We’re talking about your oven. Not a can of beans over an open fire. This isn’t Blazing Saddles.
If you’re cooking for a family and running low on time, popping some wings into an air fryer will get food on the plate faster. Or, if you’re less comfortable navigating complex recipes (relatable), air fryers make food prep easy. Imagine meeting your partner’s friends for the first time, and you bring microwaved taquitos to the dinner party.
Can I use an air fryer for oven recipes?
Absolutely. Some people prefer to use an air fryer because it uses dry heat. No need for oil. No need to wait too long. Cooking with an oven is like sunbathing. Air fryers are the tanning bed. That said, not all recipes will translate well. Ina Garten’s infamous roast chicken will not taste the same in an air fryer. For the special meals, stick to a cooking range and oven.
Is the air fryer time the same as an oven?
An air fryer takes less time than an oven. There are helpful conversion calculators that give you the option to plug in the oven temperature and cook time to generate the equivalent for an air fryer.
How Cooking Methods Differ
Beyond speed, air fryers can change the final result of your meal, even if you followed the recipe to a T.
Air fryer vs. oven: texture & flavor
Because it circulates air quickly, an air fryer will give you a crispy, deep-fried texture without the added oil. Things like wings, fries, or bacon do best in an air fryer. So please, indulge. For foods that taste better with a softer, more succulent texture (think pot roast, roast chicken, etc.), an oven is the way to go.
What else can you use an air fryer for?
Aside from cooking meals quickly, air fryers are great for preparing a single-serving meal, cooking frozen food, or reheating leftovers. Stop putting your next-day pizza in the microwave. We’re grown now. Be better.
